Baby Skincare with Baby Dove

When I was younger, there were a few things that we always had in the house growing up. Just little things that you don’t appreciate at the time, but they make up that feeling of ‘home’. One of those things was a little bar of Dove soap. We had a cabinet under the sink and you’d always find a spare in there. I don’t know who liked it – whether my mum or my dad – but I know they both prefer to use soap, and always have done, and I have always been a shower gel/body wash girl myself. It always smelt the same though, always a a little indentation of a dove. And sometimes my parents would stick the old skinny slip of a bar, to the new, one, as not to waste it.

Now, aged 29 with two children of my own, I use the Dove body washes all the time. My favourite is the Nourishing Care & Oil one – I like how moisturising it is and buy it often.

But when it comes to my babies, I have used many different brands, I’ll admit. Most of the time I will get what is on offer, but I also have to be careful because Bill, my son, has sensitive skin, and Daisy, my little girl, is only one, so I still try and be as selective as I can.

I was quite excited to hear that Dove were launching a baby range – Baby Dove. A range of products developed specifically with little ones in mind, except, this time, it’s by a brand with 60 years of experience when it comes to moisture, mildness and gentle body care.

As part of the range, you will find a body wash, shampoo, lotion, a soap bar (just like the grown-up version!), nappy cream and wipes.

We have been using the whole range every day, and I’ve absolutely loved using a brand that I already have a lot of trust in.

My favourite thing, aside from the overall quality, is probably the scent in the Rich Moisture range. There is also a fragranced range called Sensitive Moisture, for those who don’t like to use scented products on their baby’s skin. But, I think we can all agree that the original Dove range has a scent that we all know and love. It’s clean and fresh and is one of those smells that you can associate immediately with the brand. And it’s the same for Baby Dove too. In fact, as I write this, Bill is at school and Daisy is napping (hurrah!) and I have just rubbed some of the Baby Dove Rich Moisture Lotion onto my hands and arms (sharing is caring right?) and the scent is such a gentle, baby-powdery soft one. It isn’t too overpowering, but it’s comforting and is already becoming a smell I associate with having children. Do you know what I mean by that? I’m talking less about dirty nappies here, and more about that warm, snuggly newborn smell, or the smell of their hair when you cuddle them close.

I also love that there is a variety of products, for every single skincare need, but without being too much.

So if you prefer the Baby Dove Rich Moisture Baby Bar, and Baby Dove Rich Moisture Shampoo then you can use that combination. Or if you are off on holiday, then the Baby Dove Rich Moisture Head to Toe Wash will be a sensible packing choice as it can be used on all baby cleansing needs, including on the scalp (more room for everything else you’ll need!).

While we’re on the topic of washing – Baby Dove Rich Moisture Head to Toe Wash, Baby Dove Rich Moisture Shampoo and Baby Dove Rich Moisture Baby Bar all lather really nicely, which I always find is helpful when getting them clean. Plus, bubbles are always a welcome bath time distraction aren’t they? These three products also have a PH neutral formula, which you can take comfort in considering how delicate our children’s skin can be too.

I personally love the novelty element of having a ‘proper soap’ designed with children – I’ve never seen one before! For a child Bill’s age (almost five) he can wash himself easily with it, and it was being used as a toy animal surf board at one point – so it’s multi-purpose too!

That said, considering there is two of them and only one of me, the pumps on the shampoo and body wash mean I can pump what I need with just one hand, which leaves me a hand free to keep Daisy in her bath seat, as she is trying to climb out of it at the moment! It’s little things like this that make me feel like Dove have actually thought about what parents want and need when it comes to skincare and their kids.

Daisy is teething at the moment – she’s just turned one but still only has two teeth! The top two have just cut, and more should come through soon we hope, but it has meant she has had a bit of a sore bottom. I was quite tentative about trying new products on her while she was feeling delicate, but I needn’t of been. The Baby Dove Rich Moisture Nappy Cream has been a life-saver and is so gently, and the Baby Dove Rich Moisture Wipes are so soft! You may be able to see from the photograph below but they are slightly quilted in texture, which helps to remove any stubborn materials (we both know I’m talking about poo here!) and they are moist enough to work effectively, but without leaving your baby’s bottom damp, which opens it up to getting even more sore.

And the lotion is just the perfect end to a lovely bath time routine. I find Daisy loves a little baby massage before bed, it calms her down, and it’s nice for either Mark and I to have a bit of a bonding time with her, especially seeing as it keeps her skin baby soft too. And she just smells delicious afterwards too – I love it when both my babies are clean and warm after a bath, and we snuggle down and do a book together before bed. They seem all cosy and comfy, and I’m heaving just sniffing their little heads and watching them interact together as Mark puts on his best voices for the characters of the book Bill chose that night.

I might not get everything right as a mum. I think we are all handed this newborn baby sometimes, and we are worried if we are making the right choices and decisions for our little one. I have had to follow my gut and my mother’s instinct more than once. Especially in the last year, as we had to make some really big decisions as parents, while Daisy was poorly in hospital. The further into motherhood I get, the more I realise that there will always be days where we still don’t know what the right choice is (I’m sure my mum still feels that way about me) but I often find that, if you follow your heart, you usually almost always get it right. Mama knows best after all.

That’s why, with decisions like my baby’s skincare, I love that I can place a little bit of confidence in products like Baby Dove. They are developed with kids and parents in mind and their brand philosophy truly encourages parents to trust their way.

I can’t believe that as a prominent parenting blogger you have collaborated with them on this? Their advert was disgusting. Part of me thinks they did it just to get people talking but the other part of me thinks they are just out and out morons. I’m really disappointed to see you’ve given any support to this campaign Charlotte 🙁

Hi Layla, I was only asked to review the range, not the campaign – I actually did the review before I saw the advert come out and I didn’t agree with it either. The products themselves are great, but I don’t support the messaging. I’m sorry to be a disappointment, but I promise you the review came from a good place. xx
