"Snug as a bear can be, dreaming in a honey tree..."

From when I get home from work, until Wilbo's bedtime, is a very special time for us. Stephen is often working and it's become the norm that it's just Mummy and Billy. And the dog of course.

We always have our dinner together, tonight it will be gnocchi I think (the blessing of baby-led weaning). And we always have a play on the floor together - he's currently trying to tackle crawling and it's so funny watching him drag himself like a little slug across the floor.

The things we do will change from time-to-time. Maybe we will have a visitor. Maybe he'll have something new to try for dinner. But one thing we always do, and we have done since I can remember, is watch The Tales of Friendship with Winnie the Pooh.

Now, before I joined The Motherhood, I always said that my children wouldn't be the sort to watch television. But when reality hit and it was that or go hungry for the next twelve hours, the Square Nanny doesn't look too bad. So Wilbo does enjoy the occasional Special Agent Oso, or Handy Manny. We're team Disney Junior by the way. CBeebies often makes me feel as though I have taken some form of narcotic - especially Baby Jake (if you aren't aware of the child with an animated head and a cartoon body, you need to Google him - but first make sure you feel safe and secure because too much may cause insanity).

I kind of fancy him just for his Pooh voice. Oh dear.

One programme I've always loved is Tales of Friendship with Winnie the Pooh. It's narrated by Peep-Show star, Robert Webb (see children's TV can be a bit cool after all) and it has the traditional Winnie the Pooh drawings brought to life on-screen. It's hard to explain - it's not quite animation, but it shows the pages of the book, which flood with colour and turn. There is also an extremely cute bedtime song at the end and, a sucker for all kinds of cheese, I love it! I may know all of the words too...

At first I was sure that I enjoyed it more than the Wilbo himself, but then one evening, when he was crying that heartbreaking cry that babies do when they don't feel well, I started (an act of desperation) to sing the little song. And he settled. He rested his head on my shoulder and his cries turned into a whimper, and then nothing at all.

He associated it with me. And it felt amazing. We've never missed one since. The song never fails to soothe him and it's always something I'll hold dear.

I never thought I would find something special in television. But I did. And I think you should all go and pop your PJs on and grab your child/dog/whatever there is to hand and watch it too - it's even in sing-a-long form below (I'm so good to you). Or you can pop Disney Junior on tonight - me and Wilbo will be there at 6:40pm, cuddles at the ready...

"Ah yes - that hug and kiss..."

    1. I think CBBC is much better - less mental. Children love CBeebies but it sends me doolally and my mum fancies Mr Bloom! Wilbo is usually asleep by 7:30pm. Is that late? I don't know - he put himself in that routine and it works for us - means I have some time with him and it's lush! :) xxx

  2. I've never ventured over to the land of Disney junior (viva la nick junior!) but this show sounds so sweet! Probably better than having the Simpsons on haha, but Aiden gets to watch Peppa (and snort along) and Ben&Holly. After 5:30 it's mummy's turn for tv! ;) though I kinda want to watch this for Simon Webb alone...
That is so sweet that Will associates the song with mummy time, just precious! Xo

  3. Back when Aaron was as young as your baby looks (he's 2.5 now) the thing that ALWAYS soothed him was this You Tube video and me singing it in the same melody worked too, no matter where we were or what the circumstances were. It worked for a long 6 months till he grew up and we outgrew it.

I love the Pooh voice too ;-) we are also huge Disney Junior fans.

You know a new show is starting on Friday? Henry Hugglemonster.

  4. My daughter switches her obsession from Phoo, to Dora to Deigo all the time. It's always what she is feeling for but I more like the Dora and Deigo because it teaches a little spanish and other educational things. I do not mind the TV, but I also like for them to get some playtime outdoor.
I am following you now and would love for you to follow along.

  6. Thank you for the recommendation. I hope that this series is continued for when my baby is out so that we can watch it together. :-)
Winnie the Pooh is such a delightful character, I also love Peter Rabbit. I would love if they showed some of that on the telly. Maybe I should search for a DVD.
